Our Story

Ubuntu means “humanity towards others”, “kindness”, and “fellow feeling”. Ubuntu Project was initiated to increase the engagement of African Australian communities living in Australia. It is all about humanity, community, engagement, and helping others.
We dreamt of uplifting Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and we were motivated to help underprivileged and marginalised groups as we ourselves had seen the need for it in our daily lives.
We started at a small scale to bridge gaps and help the enthusiastic youth of Melbourne. Our team consist of members from diverse cultures and disciplines who know their roots and the
struggles young people face every day.
Our organisation has grown gradually, and today, we operate at a much broader level to engage with young people and their families to help them connect with each other and to avail various developmental opportunities.

Our Mission

Our mission is to connect people. We value the power of connection among people in multicultural societies like Australia. It is great to live in a multicultural society, but the disadvantages are not negligible as they can waste talent, decrease engagement, and fracture social cohesion.
Through advocacy, the provision of consulting and training services and partnerships we aim to

  1. improve the policies, programs and services provided to members of the African Australian communities to achieve improved outcomes
  2. supports community lead projects and organisations to upskill and achieve their goals through capacity building.

We motivate African Australian community members to engage, learn, grow and inspire through our various initiatives.

Our Passion

We are passionate about supporting members of the African Australian community and increasing social cohesion. Our programs give young people the tools they need to develop self-confidence, personality, and relationships that will help them grow to become leaders in our communities.
This is achieved through “Ubuntu” an eternal African philosophy of ‘Oneness’ – this oneness is an understanding of the interconnectedness of all life. A quality that includes the essential human virtues; compassion and humanity.

Our Goals

As a multiethnic society, Australia is host to a broad range of cultures. Young people in Australia who are raised in multi-cultural families are more likely to face racism and discrimination. This has an adverse impact on many areas of their lives.
As such our primary focus is to advocate for the improvement of policies, programs and services that impact on the lives of Victorias African residents.
Secondly, we aim to create community leaders among African Australians who are able to inspire their peers, cause change and our goal is to produce and highlight such role models in our communities
